Loyola University Students: Access To Multiple Libraries

Loyola University has campuses in Chicago and New Orleans, and their library access policies differ. Loyola University Chicago Libraries have established reciprocal library privileges with a number of peer universities, allowing students and faculty from other institutions to access their libraries. Alumni can also enter the library buildings on both campuses by presenting their alumni cards. Community members can access the Cudahy Library from Monday to Saturday, from 8 am to 5 pm, by presenting a government-issued photo ID at the front desk. Loyola University New Orleans allows alumni to continue using the Monroe Library after they graduate, although some resources are exclusive to currently enrolled students or current members of the Loyola community.

Loyola University Chicago Libraries allow visitors

The Loyola University Chicago Libraries do allow visitors. However, there are some restrictions on who can enter and when.

Community Members

Community members can access the Information Commons and Cudahy Library from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. A government-issued photo ID must be presented at the front desk, and visitors are restricted during final exam periods. The Lewis Library at the Water Tower Campus does not permit community access.

Visiting Scholars

Scholars visiting Loyola University Chicago on a long-term basis to collaborate with a faculty member or department can request a guest card. The Dean or department chair should submit a request via email to Chris Martin, Head of Access Services.

Students and Faculty from Other Institutions

Loyola University Chicago has reciprocal library privileges with several peer universities. Visiting students and faculty from these institutions can access the libraries by presenting an ID from their university.

Alumni

Alumni can enter the library buildings on both campuses by presenting their alumni card. They can also obtain a library courtesy card to borrow books.

InfoPass

If you need access to specific research material not available elsewhere, you may be eligible for an InfoPass. This pass grants access to the libraries and their resources.

Friends of the Libraries

Members of the Friends group can access the libraries and borrow books.

Other Chicago Libraries

Loyola University Chicago also has reciprocal borrowing agreements with other Chicago libraries. These agreements allow students and faculty to borrow items from other libraries.

Database Access

Loyola University Chicago has an agreement with Northwestern University that allows current students and full-time faculty and staff with borrowing privileges at Loyola libraries to access selected licensed databases via guest/public workstations onsite at Northwestern. This does not include remote/proxy access.

Loyola University New Orleans alumni can use the library

Loyola University alumni in New Orleans can continue to use the Monroe Library after they graduate. Alumni can use the public spaces in the library, such as the first and second floors, which are engagement and collaborative work floors. They can also use the public computers and the pay-to-print system.

Alumni will need a valid ID to borrow books, with a limit of ten books at a time. They can obtain an alumni borrower's card at no charge, which allows them to borrow books and selected other materials. Alumni are not able to log in to student workstations, use the student print system, or access library electronic resources from off-campus. They also cannot reserve or use study rooms and can only borrow books, not other materials.

The Law Library at Loyola University New Orleans is also open to alumni, with specific hours available for alumni, faculty, staff, and current students.

Loyola University Chicago also offers library access to alumni, who can enter the library buildings on both campuses by presenting their alumni card. Alumni of Loyola University Chicago can borrow up to 100 items.

Loyola University Chicago Libraries have reciprocal borrowing agreements

To be eligible for borrowing privileges at Loyola University Chicago Libraries, individuals must be current students or full-time faculty and staff from the partner institution and have borrowing privileges at their own libraries. It is important to note that this arrangement does not extend to research assistants, alumni, retired faculty (except emeritus faculty), visiting scholars, or domestic partners of faculty, staff, or students.

The reciprocal borrowing agreements provide onsite access to selected licensed databases via guest or public workstations but do not include remote or proxy access to databases. The loan period is typically four weeks, except for items reserved for a class, which are excluded from this program. All books are subject to recall, and items on loan are guaranteed a one-week loan period. DVDs and videos from the Mitchell Multimedia Center can be borrowed for seven days.

To obtain a borrower's card at Loyola University Chicago Libraries, eligible individuals from partner institutions must have a library account in good standing at their home institution. They can then complete an application form for a reciprocal borrower's card, which is valid for an academic year and can be renewed annually upon verification of current status and good standing at both institutions.

Loyola University Chicago Libraries offer interlibrary loans

To use the interlibrary loan service, you will need to create an account in the ILLiad system. With this account, you will be able to request items, view the status of your requests, and check the due dates for items that you have borrowed. Articles requested through interlibrary loan can be viewed as PDFs within the ILLiad system and can be printed.

On average, article requests through interlibrary loan take 3 business days or less, while book requests take approximately 7-10 business days. This timing depends on the number of libraries owning the item, the demand for the material, and the distance of the supplying library from Loyola.

It is important to note that due to contractual limitations, off-campus access to online resources is restricted to Loyola students, faculty, or staff only. Additionally, interlibrary loan services do not include the borrowing of required textbooks from other libraries.

Loyola University Chicago also has reciprocal borrowing agreements with a number of peer universities, allowing their students and faculty to borrow from Loyola's libraries and vice versa. Current students and full-time faculty and staff from Loyola University of Chicago with borrowing privileges at Loyola libraries are eligible for borrowing privileges at Northwestern Libraries, for example.

Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Library has a food and drink policy

The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Library allows food and drink items within its premises. This policy has been in place since August 1, 2013. However, it is important to note that the consumption of food and drinks should not cause any disturbance to other library users. For example, food with pungent odours, excessive noise from eating crunchy food, or slurping soup are not allowed. The library staff may request patrons to refrain from consuming such items if they cause a disturbance.

The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Library is located on the Dominican campus and occupies over 50,000 square feet of space. The library has a dedicated staff, including four librarians, and offers various resources and services to support the curricular and research needs of the College's faculty and students. The library has two student computer labs, one with 25 desktop computers and the other, the Morris Bart Instructional Lab, used for various instructional purposes.

The library also offers interlibrary loan services, allowing currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff to request books, articles, or other resources not available in their collection from other libraries. Additionally, the library provides study rooms on the second and third floors, available on a first-come basis for current Loyola students and recent Loyola Law graduates preparing for the bar exam.

The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Library has a comprehensive collection of resources, including federal and state legal research sources, specific subject materials, and law-related books. The library also houses a microform collection with United States Supreme Court records, state bar journals, and legal treatises from the nineteenth century.
