Emporia State University, also known as ESU, is a public university in Emporia, Kansas. With an enrollment of 6,000 students, it is the seventh-largest university in Kansas by student population.
The university was established in March 1863 as the Kansas State Normal School, and it is the third-oldest public university in the state. The origins of the university date back to 1861, when Kansas became a state, and there was a question of where the university would be located: Lawrence, Manhattan, or Emporia. In February 1863, Manhattan was chosen as the site for the state's land-grant college, leaving Lawrence and Emporia as the final two candidates. Ultimately, Lawrence was selected by just one vote. On March 7, 1863, the Kansas Legislature passed the enabling act to establish the Kansas State Normal School, which later became Emporia State University. The university did not open its doors until February 15, 1865.
In 1876, the Kansas Legislature passed the "Miscellaneous appropriations bill of 1876", which resulted in the closure of Leavenworth Normal and Concordia Normal. This meant that state funding for normal schools could be directed to Emporia. In the early 20th century, the Kansas State Normal School established satellite campuses in Pittsburg and Hays. The Pittsburg branch became Pittsburg State University, and the Hays campus evolved into Fort Hays State University.
Today, Emporia State University offers degrees through seven schools, one college, and one institute. These include the School of Business and Technology, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Library and Information Management, the School of Science and Mathematics, the School of Visual and Performing Arts, the School of Applied Health Sciences, The Teachers College, and the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies.
