Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, is named after Bishop William Taylor (1821-1902). Bishop Taylor was an American Methodist missionary minister who spent most of his adult life performing missionary work around the world.
Taylor was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, to Stuart and Martha (Hickman) Taylor. He was converted in 1841 at a Methodist Episcopal camp meeting and began his missionary service in California in 1849, ministering without salary to Native Americans, Chinese immigrants, and the sick and poor. He also provided services in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush of 1849.
In 1863, Taylor visited Australia and New Zealand, and then South Africa in 1866, where his evangelistic campaigns among the black population were revolutionary. In 1870, he arrived in Bombay, India, and began preaching to English-speaking people in the evenings and to the Hindustani people of lower India through an interpreter. Taylor's influence was immediate and far-reaching, and he is credited with converting an estimated six thousand natives to Christianity during his time in Cape Town.
