The University of Alaska System is a system of public universities in the US state of Alaska. It was founded in 1917 and consists of three separately accredited universities with a total of 19 campuses. The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) was the first university in the system and is its flagship campus. It was founded in 1917 as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines and became the University of Alaska in 1935. The Fairbanks-based programs became the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1975.
UAF is located in College, Alaska, a suburb of Fairbanks. In addition to the Fairbanks Troth Yeddha' campus, UAF has six rural and urban campuses: the Bristol Bay Campus in Dillingham, the Chukchi Campus in Kotzebue, the Fairbanks-based Interior Alaska Campus, the Kuskokwim Campus in Bethel, the Northwest Campus in Nome, and the UAF Community and Technical College, headquartered in downtown Fairbanks. The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) is a public university and part of the University of Alaska System. It was established on July 1, 1987, through the consolidation of the former University of Alaska Juneau, Ketchikan Community College, and Islands Community College (Sitka). The university is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
UAS has a main campus in Juneau, Alaska, and extended campuses in Sitka and Ketchikan. The Juneau Campus is the largest of the three.
