Brock University is named after Major-General Sir Isaac Brock

In 1802, Brock was assigned to Lower Canada, and later Upper Canada (present-day Ontario). He successfully commanded his regiment in Upper Canada for many years, even amidst challenges such as desertion and near-mutinies. During the War of 1812, Brock played a crucial role in defending Upper Canada against the United States. His military prowess, particularly his success at Detroit, earned him a knighthood in the Order of the Bath and the title "Hero of Upper Canada."

Despite his lack of extensive formal education, Brock valued learning and often spent his leisure time reading books on military tactics, science, ancient history, and other topics. He died on October 13, 1812, at the Battle of Queenston Heights, located just 20 km from the present-day Brock University campus. His last words are said to have been "Surgite!" (Latin for "Push on!"), which is now the university's motto. Brock's legacy is honoured through the university's name and motto, as well as a limestone monument at Queenston Heights Park in Niagara Falls that contains his remains.
