The university has a long history, first established at Wilberforce University, a historically black college in southern Ohio, jointly founded by the Cincinnati Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the AME Church in 1855. The college had a biracial group of trustees and, by 1860, 200 students, mostly the mixed-race children of wealthy Southern planters. However, with the advance of the Civil War, the college was forced to close in 1862 as most Southerners withdrew their children.
In 1887, the Ohio General Assembly created the Combined Normal and Industrial Department at Wilberforce, providing vocational education and teacher training. This department was part of Wilberforce University but had a separate board of trustees, allowing state legislators to sponsor scholarships and provide financial aid. In 1941, the curriculum was expanded to a four-year program emphasizing teacher education, and in 1947, it legally separated from Wilberforce University, becoming the College of Education and Industrial Arts at Wilberforce, Ohio. In 1951, it was renamed Central State College, and in 1965, it achieved university status.
