Before the First World War, Monash commanded the 13th Infantry Brigade. Shortly after the war broke out, he became commander of the 4th Brigade in Egypt and took part in the Gallipoli campaign. In July 1916, he took charge of the 3rd Division in north-western France, and in May 1918, he became commander of the Australian Corps, the largest corps on the Western Front at the time. Monash was the only Australian brigade commander among the original troops at Gallipoli who was not killed or evacuated as wounded. By the end of the war, he had acquired an outstanding reputation for intellect, personal magnetism, management, and ingenuity, as well as the respect and loyalty of his troops.
Monash was knighted by King George V on the battlefield for his role in the Battle of Hamel Hill. Many historians consider him to be the foremost Allied military commander of the First World War. Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery later wrote: "I would name Sir John Monash as the best general on the western front in Europe". For his services during the War, Monash was appointed as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George on 1 January 1919.
