Edward Waters University (EWU), a private Christian historically Black university, was founded in 1866 by members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME Church). The college was originally named Brown Theological Institute by the first African Methodist Episcopal pastor in the state, William G. Steward. It was forced to close for much of the 1870s due to financial difficulties but reopened in 1883 as "East Florida Conference High School". Edward Waters University's accreditation was reaffirmed in 2006.
