Southern Connecticut State University, also known as Southern Connecticut, Southern Connecticut State, SCSU, or simply "Southern", is a public research university in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. The university was founded in 1893 as the \"New Haven State Normal School\", a two-year teacher training school. The Skinner School, a two-story building on State Street, was the university's first campus. Arthur Boothby Morrill served as the principal of the Normal School from its founding in 1893 until 1924. The faculty at the time consisted of Morrill and two female teachers. Prospective students had to be at least 16 years old and had either completed three years of high school or gained two years of teaching experience.
The library at Southern Connecticut State University is named after Hilton C. Buley, who was president of the New Haven State Teachers College, the university's former name, from 1954 to 1971.
