History of the university
Tuskegee University, formerly known as the Tuskegee Institute, is a private, historically Black university in Tuskegee, Alabama. The university was founded as a Normal School for teachers on July 4, 1881, by the Alabama Legislature. The school's founder and first principal/president was Booker T. Washington.
Booker T. Washington began classes for his new school in a rundown church and shanty. In 1882, he purchased a former plantation of 100 acres, on which the earliest campus buildings were constructed, usually by students as part of their work-study. By the start of the 20th century, the Tuskegee Institute occupied nearly 2,300 acres. Washington intended to train students in skills, morals, and religious life, in addition to academic subjects. The Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute (1891-1937) promoted Washington's principles of providing practical training for African Americans and helping them develop economic self-reliance through the mastery of manual trades and agricultural skills.
In the 1920s, Tuskegee shifted from vocational education to academic higher education and became an accredited, degree-granting institute. It was renamed Tuskegee Institute in 1937 and began offering graduate-level instruction in 1943. The renowned agricultural chemist George Washington Carver, who headed the school's agriculture department, conducted most of his research at Tuskegee from 1896 until his death in 1943.
