The University of Memphis is a public institution founded in 1912. It is located approximately 5 miles (8 km) east of downtown Memphis in the University District neighbourhood. The campus covers 1,600 acres, though another source states that the campus covers 1,160 acres (4.7 km2), not including the law school in the former US federal customshouse in downtown Memphis. The historic core of the campus covers around 30 acres (120,000 m2).
The campus is home to fifty tiger statues, placed there by the Alumni Association in honour of the university's centennial in 2012. The centre of the main campus comprises buildings that made up the original campus, including Scates Hall, Manning Hall, Mynders Hall, and the Administration Building, which were erected in the early 20th century. This section stretches from Patterson St. south to the end of the main campus at Walker Ave, with most buildings surrounding Alumni Mall and Student Plaza.
