Abilene Christian University (ACU) is a private Christian research university in Abilene, Texas. The university has a 272-acre campus, which was established in 1906 as Childers Classical Institute. Initially, the institute featured a lower school starting in the seventh grade, but it wasn't until 1912, when Jesse P. Sewell became president, that the school began using Abilene Christian College on its printed materials. The name change was formalised in 1920.
In 1928 and 1929, eight new buildings were erected on the campus, with the twenty-fourth session commencing on the new campus in the fall of 1929. The move was financed by the trustees, who voted for bonds totalling $500,000. Unfortunately, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 impeded sales of the bonds, and the buyers returned their lots to the college, unable to pay for them. This put the college at risk of foreclosure, but in 1934, benefactors John G. Hardin and his wife provided the college with securities that retired the debt.
In 1951, Abilene Christian College received school accreditation when it became an accredited member of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The college became Abilene Christian University in 1976.
In July 2015, the university expanded further, signing a lease for a new campus in Addison, Texas. The new campus, called ACU Dallas, offers several graduate programs, including an MBA and an Ed.D. in organizational leadership.
