Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, was founded in 1901 by James Millikin, a prominent local businessman and banker. James was born on August 2, 1827, in Clarkstown, now Ten Mile, in western Pennsylvania, and was the son of a moderately successful farmer, Abel Millikin, and Nancy (Van Dyke) Millikin.
James Millikin attended Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College) and it was here that he vowed that if he made his fortune, he would found an educational institution where anyone who wanted to learn could receive an education that would prepare them for their chosen occupation. After college, James went into business with his father, and the two spent a summer driving sheep to Indiana to sell at market.
In 1856, James Millikin arrived in Decatur and continued his work in livestock and real estate. He married Anna Bernice Aston, the daughter of a local pastor, on January 1, 1857. Around 1860, he entered the banking business, taking over the location of a local bank that had failed, and placing his sign, "J. Millikin, banker," outside. James continued to work in banking until his death, and by 1907, his bank was considered one of the strongest small-city banks in the United States.
James Millikin founded Millikin University with a unique vision: to embrace the "practical" side of learning alongside the "literary and classical," and, while affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, to remain open to all and avoid narrow sectarianism. The university was initially established in partnership with Lincoln University, an existing college in Lincoln, Illinois, which was also affiliated with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. This partnership created a new overarching university, the James Millikin University, with two subsidiary campuses: Lincoln College and the Decatur College and Industrial School, a new campus in Decatur. James Millikin's legacy continues to this day, with Millikin University now offering undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees and certificates.
