Reapplying after failing the exam
If you have failed the NCLEX-RN examination, you will receive a Candidate Performance Report (CPR) which will guide you on how to prepare for retaking the exam. The NCSBN retake policy allows candidates to retake the exam 45 days after the administration of the first exam. However, some NRBs require candidates to wait longer between exams, and candidates can take the exam a maximum of eight times a year. Candidates are encouraged to contact the NRB for their specific NCLEX retake policy.
To reapply for the NCLEX-RN examination, you will need to refer to the Repeat/Reapply for Examination page for instructions. If you do not pass the exam, you will receive your test results by mail, along with instructions on how to reapply. If you are applying for licensure by mail, check the "Request for Interim Permit" box and add an additional $100 fee to your total payment. If you are applying for licensure online, choose "Yes" from the corresponding dropdown menu when asked if you are requesting an Interim Permit. An additional $100 will be added to your application fee.
If you have met the fingerprint requirements and submitted your Interim Permit application, $100 fee, and received your eligibility notice for the NCLEX-RN, you may access the BreEZe License Verification system to check if your Interim Permit has been issued. An Interim Permit is valid for six months or until the results of the first NCLEX-RN exam are received, whichever comes first.
If eight or more years have passed since your RN license expired and you do not currently hold a registered nurse license in another state or U.S. territory, you are required to retake and pass the NCLEX-RN exam before your license can be reinstated.
