What You'll Learn

Terp Payment Plan
The Terp Payment Plan (TPP) is a service offered by the University of Maryland that allows students to pay their tuition fees in manageable monthly instalments over the course of a semester (Fall or Spring). The TPP is administered by Nelnet Business Solutions, a third-party provider. Students can set up their payment plan account, view their account, or modify their plan amount online, with 24-hour access. The TPP system is not directly connected to the UMD Student Account balance, so it is the student's responsibility to ensure that the plan amount covers all term charges.
The TPP enrolment fee is $50 per semester and is non-refundable. Payments are automatically withdrawn from the enrolled payment method account on the 5th of each month. If the first attempt fails, a second and final attempt is made on the 20th of the same month. If the second attempt also fails, the plan will be terminated, and the remaining balance will be reflected on the student account. A $40 late payment fee may be charged for payments that fail on the initial monthly attempt, and a $30 fee may be charged for a failed payment due to a returned ACH check payment.
Students are encouraged to utilise electronic payment methods, but paper checks or money orders are also accepted. These should be made payable to the "University of Maryland" for the exact amount due and include the student's name and University ID number (UID) written on the front. VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards; VISA and MasterCard-branded debit cards; and ACH (electronic checking) payments are also accepted. There is a 2.85% processing fee for credit and debit card payments.
It is important to note that prior past-due balances must be paid in full and cannot be included in a current term plan. Students must make their first instalment payment (down payment) and the enrolment fee for the plan to be considered effective.

Scholarships and grants
The University of Maryland (UMD) offers a range of scholarships and grants to help students pay for their tuition and other expenses. These include departmental scholarships, institutional endowed scholarships, and merit scholarships.
The university utilizes a scholarship-matching platform called Scholarship Universe to help students find and apply for scholarships. This platform matches students with scholarships based on their academic profile, major, minor, college, department, academic merits, financial need, hobbies, interests, and affiliations. Students can also use the platform to search for and apply for external scholarships offered by organizations outside of UMD.
To get started with the scholarship search, students can log in to Scholarship Universe with their Directory ID and password and answer the matching questions. Students can also review their dashboard to see the scholarships they have been matched with and any outstanding items that require their attention. Additionally, students can upload or create documents, such as essays or resumes, to assist with their scholarship applications.
UMD offers several merit scholarships to incoming freshmen, including the Banneker/Key Scholarship, which is the most prestigious and can cover up to the full cost of tuition, mandatory fees, housing, food, and includes admission to the Honors College. The Dean's Scholarship is another option, offering an annual award of $1,500 for freshman year or $4,500 for freshman and sophomore years, but it is only available to in-state applicants and is not renewable. The President's Scholarship is a four-year scholarship ranging from $2,000 to $12,500 per year and is open to both in-state and out-of-state applicants. These scholarships are typically based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and essays.

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)
The University of Maryland requires all full-time graduate students to either opt for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) or submit a waiver to opt out of SHIP during the SHIP open enrollment period. Students who have existing insurance and wish to be credited for the school health insurance must submit a waiver. Once approved, the insurance charge will be removed from the student account. Students who do not have existing insurance need to enroll in the school health plan, and charges will be assessed on the student account for this insurance.
The annual SHIP premium of $2,806 will be posted to the student account. If you wish to retain SHIP, no further action is required. Students can also enroll in a health insurance plan that is outside of the University of Maryland. However, it must be compliant with the Affordable Care Act and underwritten in the United States. Students with insurance from an outside source must submit a waiver to opt out of SHIP promptly to avoid getting charged for SHIP on their student financial account.
The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is the default insurance for all full-time graduate students. Students who hold a graduate assistantship are eligible to enroll in a State of Maryland Employee Health Plan, which is different from SHIP. Students enrolled in certificate programs, exclusively online programs, and/or programs at the Shady Grove campus will not be automatically enrolled in SHIP and are eligible to purchase SHIP using the voluntary enrollment process.
The University of Maryland accepts various payment methods, including VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards; VISA and MasterCard-branded debit cards; and ACH (electronic checking) payments. There is no fee for ACH payments, but a 2.85% processing fee is charged for credit and debit card payments. Students are highly encouraged to use electronic payment methods, but checks or money orders are also accepted. These should be made payable to the "University of Maryland" for the exact amount due and include the student's name and University ID number (UID) written on the front.

Late payment fees
Students are responsible for checking their billing information and ensuring payments are made on time. The University of Maryland sends monthly email notifications of generated e-bills when a balance is owed, but students are still responsible if they do not receive them. Students can check their account balance and billing statements by logging into the student financial portal.
Students who fail to pay their balance by the due date will incur a late payment fee of 5% or $10.00, whichever is higher, on the total past-due amount once per Fall and Spring term. An additional 1.5% fee may be charged in subsequent months on past-due balances. Students who do not pay their balance and the late fee during the semester in which the delinquency occurs will be ineligible to register for subsequent semesters and will not be permitted other university privileges until the debt and penalty fees are cleared.
Delinquent accounts will be referred to the State Collections Unit, and Maryland law allows this unit to intercept state income tax refunds for individuals with delinquent accounts. The Central Collections Unit costs incurred in collecting delinquent accounts will be charged to the student, with a minimum collection fee of 17% plus attorney and/or court costs. No degrees or diplomas will be issued to students who have not made satisfactory settlements of their accounts.
Students who register for classes and later decide not to attend must submit a Cancellation of Registration Form to the Office of the University Registrar before the first day of classes to avoid a financial obligation to the university. Students who withdraw from classes after the first day of classes may receive a refund of tuition and fees, with the amount depending on the date the written withdrawal request is received.

Refunds
There are two types of refunds: Financial Aid refunds and non-Financial Aid refunds. Financial Aid refunds are automatically processed twice per week and require no action from the student. Non-Financial Aid refunds, such as credit balances that arise from scholarships, changes in meal plans, overpayments, etc., are not processed automatically. By default, they are held and applied to future term charges. To initiate a refund, students must submit a refund request to the Student Financial Services and Cashiering office.
Students with a credit on their account that is unrelated to financial aid and who do not have an active Terp Payment Plan may complete an online refund request. On the online refund request page, students must enter the checking account number they wish to have their refund deposited into. This is not the debit card number. Upon verification by the Refund Unit, refunds are processed in the same manner in which the student originally paid. Refund checks are made payable to the student and are mailed from Student Financial Services and Cashiering. Credit balances attributable to payments made by personal check are subject to a 30-day hold to ensure that the check clears the bank before a refund check is issued.
For payments made by credit card, refunds will be credited to the original credit card account and will be reflected on the credit card monthly statement. If a student receives a refund of amounts charged to a credit card, the credit card owner is responsible for paying any and all interest charges accrued on the credit card.
Students are encouraged to enroll in direct deposit for their refunds, which is the quickest way to receive a refund. Students who haven't enrolled in direct deposit will be issued checks, which will be mailed to their local address on record. If a student's local address is on campus, the refund check will be mailed to their permanent address.
