ACPA's history
ACPA–College Student Educators International, also known as the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), has a long history dating back to 1924. The association was formed by May L. Cheney, who organized a teacher placement office at the University of California, Berkeley. In its early years, ACPA was known as the National Association of Appointment Secretaries (NAAS) and served as a community for educators.
In 1929, NAAS witnessed 46 members register for its Sixth Annual Convention, evolving into the National Association of Personnel and Placement Officers (NAPPO). The association continued to grow and, in 1931, adopted the name American College Personnel Association (ACPA). During the 1930s, ACPA's communication consisted of a mailed newsletter, the Personnel-O-Gram (P-O-G). ACPA also collaborated with the leaders of the American Council on Education (ACE) to develop the Student Point of View statement, demonstrating its commitment to student perspectives.
Moving into the 1940s, ACPA transitioned its newsletter communication to the Journal for Educational and Psychological Measurement (EPM). The association continued to expand and, by the 1950s, introduced the Personnel and Guidance Journal as its new official journal, replacing the EPM. ACPA's membership flourished, surpassing 1,000 members in 1952 and continuing to grow over the next two decades. During this period, ACPA also launched the Journal of College Student Personnel, with Charles Lewis as its first editor.
In the 1970s, ACPA actively collaborated with other national organizations, coordinating several national conventions. The association established the Standing Committee for Women in 1973 and the Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs in 1978, reflecting its commitment to diversity and inclusion. By 1979, ACPA had become one of the first members of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS).
