Loma Linda University's history
Loma Linda University was founded in 1905 by Seventh-day Adventists John Burden and Ellen G. White as the Loma Linda Sanitarium, with the first patients admitted in October of that year. The sanitarium was soon expanded to include a nursing school, with the first nursing students accepted in December 1905, and the first commencement ceremony held in July 1907.
In 1906, the sanitarium was further expanded with the establishment of the Loma Linda College of Evangelists, which included courses in religion, general education, and nursing and medical training. The College of Medical Evangelists received its charter as a medical school in 1909, with the aim of training physicians who could meet the needs of the whole person. The school emphasised the need for healthful living as part of medical care, a revolutionary concept at the time.
The College of Medical Evangelists was initially given a 'C' rating by the American Medical Association (AMA), which formed a national Council on Medical Education in 1905. After lobbying by college leaders, the AMA upgraded the rating to a 'B', and eventually an ''A' rating in 1922.
In 1910, the school was entered in the Seventh-day Adventist Yearbook as 'Loma Linda College', with the legal title 'College of Medical Evangelists of Loma Linda' (CME). From 1913 to 1962, the college taught basic sciences in Loma Linda but sent its students to Los Angeles for clinical experience.
In 1961, the college was renamed Loma Linda University in recognition of its expanded scope. The university continued to expand, merging with La Sierra College in 1967 and incorporating a campus in Riverside, California, which included a College of Arts and Sciences, a School of Business, and a School of Education. The Loma Linda University Hospital was dedicated in 1968 and renamed the Loma Linda University Medical Center in 1970.
Today, Loma Linda University is a health sciences institution with a mission to continue the healing and teaching ministry of Jesus Christ.
