History of Auburn University
Auburn University began as the East Alabama Male College, which was chartered in 1856 and opened its doors in 1859 as a private liberal arts institution. The college had an affiliation with the Methodist Church and its first president was Reverend William J. Sasnett. From 1861 to 1866, the college was closed due to the Civil War, during which time the campus served as a training ground for the Confederate Army.
In 1872, due to financial difficulties, the Methodist Church transferred legal control of the institution to the state, making it the first land-grant college in the South to be established separately from the state university. As a result, the college became known as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1892, the college admitted women, making Auburn the oldest four-year, coeducational school in the state and the second-oldest in the Southeast. In the same year, football was introduced as a school sport.
In 1899, the college was renamed the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, largely due to the influence of William Leroy Broun, who believed in the importance of both classics and sciences for the growth of the university. During World War I, nearly all able-bodied male students aged 18 or older at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute joined the United States Army for short-lived military careers on campus.
In 1960, the school officially acquired its current name, Auburn University, reflecting its location, size, and mission. Prior to 1963, Auburn University was racially segregated, with only white students being admitted. Integration began in 1964 with the admittance of the first African-American student, Harold A. Franklin, who had to sue the university to gain admission.
