The varsity teams representing Concordia University are called the Stingers. The Concordia Stingers were established in 1974 when Sir George Williams University and Loyola College merged to form Concordia University. The Stingers replaced the preceding Sir George Williams Georgians and Loyola Warriors.
The university has 10 varsity teams, including football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's rugby, wrestling, men's and women's hockey, and men's and women's basketball. The Stingers compete with other schools in Canadian Interuniversity Sport and, more specifically, the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ), which translates to Quebec Student Sports Network. The Stingers football team plays home games at the Concordia Stadium and is coached by Brad Collinson. In 1998, the team appeared in the Vanier Cup national championship but lost to the Saskatchewan Huskies.
The Stingers have had several notable achievements over the years. In 2005, the men's rugby team won the provincial championship, and in 2010, the women's rugby team won the Quebec conference and took home a silver medal from the CIS national championship. In 2009, the women's rugby coach, Hughanna Gaw, was named CIS Rookie of the Year. The Stingers baseball team has also seen success, winning its first conference championship in school history in 2007 and advancing to the CIBA National Championships. In 2011, the Stingers finished in first place with a 13-3 record and clinched a trip to their third consecutive CIBA National Championships.
The Stingers have a Spirit Team, which was established in 2005 and is the university's first dance and cheer team, performing at football games. The Concordia Stingers Male and Female Athletes of the Year are also recognised with awards.
