Pace University, with campuses in New York City, Pleasantville, and White Plains, was founded in 1906 by brothers Homer Pace and Charles Ashford Pace as a business school. Originally named Pace Institute, the school was first established to prepare students for the New York CPA examination. The Pace brothers borrowed $600 and rented a classroom and office in the old Tribune Building in Lower Manhattan, where they taught accounting and business law to 13 students.
Within a year, the number of enrolments grew from 13 to 80 students, and the Pace School of Accountancy's success led the brothers to relocate classes to the nearby Hudson Terminal complex. Despite the stock market crash at the end of the decade, enrolment numbers continued to climb, and the school moved to the Transportation Building at 225 Broadway. In 1920, concerned about quality control, the Pace brothers decided to focus on their school in Lower Manhattan, which later became one of the campuses of Pace University.
The Pace Institute was incorporated as a non-profit institution of higher education in New York State in 1935. In 1948, the institute founded Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, leading to a name change to Pace College and an expansion of the school's curriculum. The university's first permanent home was purchased in 1951 at 41 Park Row in Manhattan, and its first Westchester campus was opened in 1963. Pace University became a fully-fledged university in 1967 and opened its largest building, 1 Pace Plaza, in 1969.
