Delta State University (DSU) is a public university in Cleveland, Mississippi, established in 1924. The university has a history of racial segregation and was slow to integrate even after racial segregation was outlawed. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that segregation within public schools was unconstitutional through the Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka case. Despite this, Delta State College (as it was known until 1974) did not admit its first Black student, Shirley Antoinette Washington, until 1967.
