Saginaw Valley State University, or SVSU, is a public university in University Center, Michigan, in the United States. Saginaw Valley State University was founded in 1963 as Saginaw Valley College, a private, four-year liberal arts institution. The college was originally called Delta Senior University.
Saginaw Valley College received its charter from the state in 1963, the same year that articles of incorporation for the college were drawn up. The college was founded as a private institution, becoming state-supported in 1965. Saginaw Valley College received full accreditation by the North Central Association in April 1970. This accreditation has been continuously retained, along with the accreditation at the master's degree level granted in 1980.
The first class of 119 students completed two years at Delta College and transferred to Saginaw Valley College. The first commencement ceremony was held in 1966 at a Midland church for a graduating class of ten. A site for a permanent Saginaw Valley College campus was chosen in 1966, and classes were moved to a building on that site the following year. In 1967, ground was broken for what would become Wickes Hall, the main administrative centre on campus.
In 1974, the college's name changed to Saginaw Valley State College. On November 5, 1987, the college became Saginaw Valley State University.
