Salisbury University, originally called the Maryland State Normal School, first opened its doors on September 7, 1925, with 105 students. The campus comprised a single building, Holloway Hall, which served as the home for all teaching, student, and administrative functions. The school was founded to address the shortage of teachers in Maryland's rural areas.
The original class of 105 students was taught by eight faculty members, six of whom were alumni of Columbia's Teachers College, which influenced the curriculum at Salisbury Normal School.
