Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, was formed in 1974 following the merger of Sir George Williams University and Loyola College. The merger had been several years in the making, with discussions beginning in 1968 after the release of the Parent Commission Report, which recommended the secularization of Quebec's educational system. The Government of Quebec then asked Loyola College and Sir George Williams University to consider some form of union.
A committee was formed to analyze the possible merger, and in 1969, a proposal was put forward to create a university federation that would allow students to take courses at both campuses without paying additional fees. This proposal also included the idea of a shuttle bus service to link the two campuses, which were 7km apart. While this option was initially set aside due to the difficulties encountered by the cohesion of the various departments and faculties, it was not completely rejected by the Joint Steering Committee.
In December 1971, the Joint Committee of Representatives of the Board of Trustees of Loyola College and the Board of Governors of Sir George Williams University was formed. In the fall of 1972, this committee produced a document outlining the basis of a university with two campuses. After several revisions, the document was accepted by both institutions, and they began the process of consolidating their operations.
The merger of the two institutions created Concordia University, an integrated institution operating under the existing charter of Sir George Williams University. The university provided students with representative student organizations and greater power over administrative decisions. Additionally, the art collections of both institutions were combined, forming the collection of the Leonard and Bina Ellen Gallery, which consists of 1,800 paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and videos.
During the 2022-2023 academic year, Concordia University had a total enrollment of 49,898 students, including 35,404 undergraduate students, 10,084 graduate students, and 4,410 continuing education students.
