Evangel University was founded by the General Council of the Assemblies of God on 1 September 1955, as the first national Pentecostal school of arts and sciences. However, they wanted to establish a college where students entering secular fields could study in a Pentecostal, faith-based environment.
The founding of Evangel University faced some opposition from within the Assemblies of God.
