Student record confidentiality
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette ensures the integrity, confidentiality, and security of all its students' educational records. Student academic records are classified as confidential and may be released only with the student's written authorization and signature, in accordance with the Public Information Act and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). FERPA applies to public schools and state or local education agencies that receive Federal education funds, and it protects both paper and computerized records.
FERPA gives parents of students under 18, or students themselves if they are over 18 or in post-secondary education, certain rights regarding their educational records. These include the right to:
- Inspect and review records
- Request amendments to records if they are inaccurate, misleading, or violate the student's privacy or other rights
- Consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information in the record, except under authorized circumstances
- Receive annual notification of their FERPA rights
FERPA also establishes penalties for violations of the law. In addition to FERPA, most states also have privacy protection laws that reinforce it. Furthermore, IDEA and other federal laws protect the confidentiality of student education records. IDEA gives parents the right to:
- Inspect and review their child's educational records
- Request explanations and interpretations of the records
- Request copies of the records if not receiving them would prevent them from exercising their right to inspect and review
- Request that their representative be given access to inspect and review the records
Schools must comply with these requests without unnecessary delay and within 45 days. While parents have a right to review records, schools are not required by Federal law to provide copies of information unless providing copies is the only way of granting access. Schools may charge a reasonable fee for obtaining records.

In this case, they must present a valid photo ID, and the name on the ID must match the name indicated on the Parchment order.
If sending someone else to pick up their transcript, students must provide a dated and signed letter that clearly states their name, ULID, the name of the authorised individual, and the purpose of the authorisation.
