Student Planner: Texas State University Guide

Texas State University offers a wide range of student services and academic support. The university has an online registration system called Texas State Self-Service, which allows students to add classes to their plan and search for courses. International students and student-athletes are provided with additional support services, and the Athletic Academic Center (AAC) assists student-athletes in various aspects of their academic and athletic careers. The university also offers a variety of dining options, a bike shop, and legal services for students.

Texas State Self-Service login

Texas State University uses an online registration system called Texas State Self-Service. To log in to Texas State Self-Service, you will need to have been admitted to the university and have a NetID and password. You can access Texas State Self-Service through CatsWeb.

Once you have logged in to Texas State Self-Service, you can search for courses using the search criteria and add them to your plan. Plans created by your advisor in Self-Service, and any Degree Works plans for the term, will be listed.

To audit a course, you must be admitted to The Graduate College. After registering on CatsWeb, you must contact the Office of the University Registrar in person by the 4th class day in the summer or by the 12th class day in the fall or spring. Check the University Academic Calendar for the exact date.

Senior citizens aged 65 or older may audit courses for free if space is available. Registration for senior citizens is permitted just before the start of the term, with reductions made by the tuition adjustment clerk in Student Business Services (at the JC Kellam Administration Building).

Course registration

Before registering for an upcoming term, Texas State University encourages all students to seek academic advising. For some departments, schools, colleges, and certain student populations, this advising is mandatory. Students who are undecided about their major are advised through University College. Other students may be advised through the department of their major and/or in the appropriate college advising centre. Advisors help students understand academic requirements and plan schedules to meet those requirements, as well as address the choice of majors and career preparation issues.

To add a class, log in to Texas State Self-Service and search for courses using the search criteria. Plans created by your advisor in Self-Service and any Degree Works plans for the term will be listed. Click 'Add' to add the course to your plan.

If you are enrolling for less than a full-time course load, you must apply for a reduced course load before enrolling or dropping a course. For F-1 international students, only one distance learning class/online course per semester may be counted toward the full-time status requirement. Course credit

Texas State University (TSU) uses an online registration system called Texas State Self-Service, which requires admission to the university along with an associated NetID and password. This system can be accessed through CatsWeb.

Students enrolled in 12 or more credit hours are considered full-time, and those in good academic standing may register for up to 18 credit hours per semester. Graduating seniors or students with a TSU GPA of 3.50 or higher may register for 19 or more credit hours with approval from their academic dean.

For international students, only one distance learning class or online course per semester may be counted toward the full-time status requirement.

Students can receive credit for work performed at another college or university, but they cannot receive credit for the same course more than once unless the course description in the catalog specifically allows it.

Additionally, TSU offers Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), which allows a limited number of credits to be waived depending on the number of credits in the degree program. Approved PLA credits may be applied to a graduate degree program as follows: up to 6 hours for 30-35 credit hour programs, up to 9 hours for 36-41 credit hour programs, and up to 12 hours for programs with 42+ hours.

To transfer credits earned at another institution, students must ensure that an official transcript showing the coursework to be transferred is on file in The Graduate College. The student may also be asked to provide a catalog with course descriptions for any transfer work requested. The applicability of transferred credit toward a graduate degree program at TSU is determined by the dean of The Graduate College based on the recommendation of the program's graduate advisor.

Students can also audit courses at TSU, but they must be admitted to the university and register for classes before completing an online Audit Request Form by the census date for the term. While audited courses will appear on the student's transcript, they will not receive credit for them. Senior citizens aged 65 or older may audit courses without payment if space is available.

Academic advising

Texas State University's academic advising centres provide high-quality professional academic advising to all students from their first semester through graduation. All first-year students, regardless of major or hours, begin their educational journey with First-Year Advising. The University Advising Centre offers major exploration guidance for students who are still in the process of exploring majors (Exploratory), are unsure about their current major, or are seeking admission to the McCoy College of Business (Pre-Business). Each college offers academic advising to their majors in their second year and beyond. Students can browse the Undergraduate Catalog for Texas State majors, minors, and their requirements. Career Services is available to help students research majors, study their options, and plan and implement their professional future.

In consultation with an advisor, students establish and refine educational and career goals that align with their individual aspirations and skills. Professional academic advisors are available for consultation throughout the year. Students are encouraged to meet with advisors on a regular basis for assistance selecting semester courses, understanding curriculum information, and planning for graduation. Additional advising resources include the undergraduate catalog and the university's official degree audit system, Degree Works.

To prepare for an advising appointment, students should review their degree audit and identify specific questions for their advisors. They should also bring any identification or documentation required by their college advising centre. It is important to note that virtual drop-in advising sessions are expected to last 10-15 minutes and are reserved for currently enrolled and returning Texas State students.
