Payment methods

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTGRV) offers various payment methods for students to pay for their tuition and fees. It is important to note that it is the student's responsibility to be aware of and meet the due dates for all payments. Here are the different ways you can pay as a student:

Online Payments

UTGRV accepts online payments through credit cards, including MasterCard, Visa, and Discover. Additionally, international students can utilise TransferMate for international wire payments to the university. TransferMate provides a safe, cost-effective, and convenient way to process payments in foreign currencies, offering excellent exchange rates and multilingual customer support.

In-Person Payments

Students can visit the Bursar Office to make in-person payments. The office is located in the Student Services Building Room 1.200 in Edinburg and the Tower Main Building Room 1.1S1 in Brownsville. Personal checks and money orders should be made payable to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and must include the student ID and driver's license number. Temporary checks are not accepted, and a returned check fee of at least $25 will be charged for insufficient funds or incorrect banking information.

Direct Deposits

UTGRV offers the convenience of direct deposits for refunds, allowing students to receive their refunds directly into their checking/savings accounts. To authorise this method, students must ensure that their bank information, including their name and account number, is entered correctly to avoid delays or rejections. Direct deposits are currently only available for active U.S. domestic checking accounts.

Emergency Tuition and Fee Loans

UTGRV provides Emergency Tuition and Fee Loans for students who have not received any other financial assistance and are enrolled. These loans are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and students are responsible for ensuring they have the necessary funds to cover their tuition and fees. The loan cost includes an origination fee of 1% of the loan amount.

Tuition due dates

It is the student's responsibility to be aware of the due dates for all payments at UTRGV. Tuition fees and other charges are posted on UTRGV student accounts, which can be viewed through my.utrgv.edu ASSIST. Students can also make payments online through ASSIST (https://mywebsis.utrgv.edu/).

Accounts that are more than three days past due will be charged a $50 monthly late fee until the balance is paid. If two payments are missed, the installment plan is rescinded, and the total balance is due immediately. A $50 late fee is charged after the due date if payment is not received, and an additional $25 if payment is not received three days after the due date.

Students must make the necessary arrangements to pay tuition and fees on time. Failure to do so may result in not maintaining classes.

Emergency loans

The University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley offers emergency tuition loans to students who need financial assistance. The Emergency Tuition Loan Office is responsible for processing and collecting these loans. To be eligible for an emergency loan, students must be 18 years or older, have no outstanding debt to the university, and have not received any financial aid disbursements. Students can apply for an emergency loan during an open processing period.

The university also offers a Student Emergency Fund, which provides financial assistance to currently enrolled students facing a sudden emergency, accident, or unforeseen event. Award amounts vary and are only given once per year. Applicants must be enrolled at UTRGV during the semester they seek aid, and their ability to attend the university must be in jeopardy due to their emergency. Decisions regarding the disbursement of funds are made on a case-by-case basis, and awards do not need to be repaid.

Payments for emergency tuition loans may take 24-48 hours to reflect on the bill. Students can pay by cash, money order, or check. If a student's financial aid award is greater than the cost of their tuition, the remaining funds may be used to pay off their emergency loan. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that any refunds issued directly to them are used to pay off their loan balance.

Students with delinquent accounts may face a UTRGV financial hold on their account, which can prevent them from viewing grades, receiving their diploma, or requesting a new loan. Additionally, as UTRGV is a state agency, a state hold will be placed at the Texas Comptroller Office on delinquent accounts, which may prevent students from receiving financial aid refunds from other state institutions. Delinquent accounts may also be reported to major national credit bureau agencies, negatively impacting credit scores and affecting real estate purchases, personal loans, and credit card applications.

For inquiries regarding emergency loans or third-party billing, students can contact the university by email at [email protected] or by phone at 956-665-2191. For questions about collections, students can email [email protected] or call the same phone number.
