History of the University of Maryland
The University of Maryland, College Park, was founded in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College (MAC). The college was established on the ancestral land of the Piscataway tribe, which it purchased from a slaveholding farmer, Charles Benedict Calvert. The site was 428 acres of Calvert's Rosseburg Farm slave plantation, and the college was founded with money earned by the sale of stock certificates.
In 1859, MAC was formally dedicated, with 34 enrolled white male students, including four of Calvert's sons. The students, referred to as cadets, received military training. Benjamin Hallowell, a Quaker, was elected the first president of MAC, on the condition that the campus farm not use slave labour. However, he resigned 30 days later after a prescription mishap nearly killed him. John Work Scott was elected as the next president but never arrived on campus.
In 1864, during the Civil War, the MAC campus was used by the Union's Ninth Army Corps, led by General Ambrose E. Burnside, as a campsite for 6,000 soldiers. Later that year, Confederate soldiers led by General Bradley T. Johnson stayed on the campus grounds while preparing to take part in a raid on Washington.
In 1912, the college survived a fire that destroyed several buildings. A large brick and concrete compass inlaid in the ground designates the former centre of the campus, with lines pointing to each destroyed building. The intersection of the lines is known as "The Point of Failure", and legend has it that any student who walks upon it will not graduate in four years.
In 1916, the state took complete control of the school, and it was renamed Maryland State College. The first female students enrolled that year. In 1920, the college became part of the University of Maryland, replacing St. John's College, Annapolis, as the university's undergraduate campus.
