The UCF varsity athletic program has a long history, dating back to its early days as a charter member of the Sunshine State Conference in 1975. UCF Athletics has since moved up to Division I, joining the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2013. In 2021, UCF received and accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference, becoming a member in 2023.

In 1994, Knightro debuted as the official athletic mascot of the Golden Knights, and the team name was shortened to the Knights in 2007.
