Blue Cross Blue Shield offers health insurance plans for students in several states in the US. Students can choose to remain on their parents' insurance plans, usually until the age of 26, or they can opt for student-specific plans. These plans are designed for college and university students and are available in states such as Massachusetts, Texas, and North Carolina. Students can enrol in these plans during the open enrolment period or for a qualifying life event. They are also ranked #1 in Massachusetts for Commercial Health Plan Member Satisfaction and most trusted.

Student Blue plan payments and waivers
Students wishing to purchase the University-sponsored Student Blue health insurance plan should go to the online enrolment form and set up their Insurance Account. Students will be automatically billed and enrolled in the Student Blue coverage unless a waiver is completed by the semester due date. Students who carry Student Blue will not be required to pay any fees upfront for medical services, except for prescription copays.
Students who are already covered by an insurance policy (e.g. through parent plans, family plans, employer-sponsored plans, or student health insurance) and wish to waive the Student Blue plan, must submit their insurance policy number for verification through the Student Blue website. A completed, verified, and approved waiver is required each semester if a student does not wish to participate in the Student Blue plan. Students with a qualifying life event who wish to enrol in the insurance plan after the open enrolment period will need to go through Student Blue directly.
To waive using TRICARE or Veteran Affairs insurance, enter the sponsor or Military Member's social security number or DOD number. Upload your military ID card or a military proof of health insurance coverage letter. When your waiver has been approved, a credit (which looks like a payment) of the premium amount will appear on your Student Account. Students may remain on their parents' insurance or buy their own health insurance plan. The plan must be a creditable health plan to be used for waiving purposes.
Students who meet the eligibility criteria, regardless of in-person or virtual means of instruction, must show proof of insurance to waive out of Student Blue or be automatically enrolled on the deadline. Students who are purchasing Student Blue insurance must go online to activate the insurance by enrolling. All International students are required to have health insurance while attending UNC Charlotte. Students may enrol in the Student Health Insurance Plan or they may enrol in another US or home country plan that meets the University's minimum health insurance requirements.

Student Blue claim forms
Students with Student Blue coverage are automatically billed and enrolled unless a waiver is submitted by the semester due date. Students are recommended to visit the health centre on campus first to receive the highest level of benefit available on the plan. If the campus health centre is unavailable, students should see an in-network provider and present their member ID card.
Most in-network doctors and healthcare providers will file a claim for you, but there may be times when you need to file your own forms, such as when travelling or using an out-of-network provider. Students can access Blue Cross NC health insurance forms and documents online. Students can also create an account on the Blue Connect member portal to manage their plan, view benefits, and check claim status.
To file a claim for vision services, students must complete a Student Blue/BCBS claim form and send it with a copy of the itemized billing statement to the address on the form. Students can download the claim form here: https://www.bluecrossnc.com/content/dam/bcbsnc/pdf/members/health-plans/claim-information/member-claim-form-requirements.pdf. It is recommended that students keep a copy of the claim form and receipt for their records.
For prescription claims, students can print and fill out the prescription claim form, which can be found here: https://www.bluecrossnc.com/content/dam/bcbsnc/pdf/members/health-plans/claim-information/member-claim-form-requirements.pdf. An itemized receipt for the purchase must be included, and credit card receipts are acceptable. There is a one-year timely filing limit for prescription claims.
