Waiving and enrolling
The University of Cincinnati offers Student Health Insurance (SHI) to its students. The insurance is underwritten by United Healthcare Student Resources and is of gold-tier standard. It covers major medical expenses and includes in-network and out-of-network coverage.
Students who are already enrolled in a health insurance plan that is equal to or better than the UC SHI may waive the UC SHI by submitting an online waiver by the deadline. The waiver can be found on the "To-Do List" in the Catalyst student portal. If approved, the waiver will be valid for the entire academic year.
If a student has waived the UC SHI and then loses their coverage, they can enrol in the UC SHI by providing documentation of the loss of coverage and completing the qualifying life event enrollment form.
Graduate students are eligible to enrol in the UC SHI and must complete the task in Catalyst to Enrol/Opt-In to coverage. Students must be actively attending classes for at least the first 31 days after the effective date of the period for which coverage is purchased.
Students who have waived the UC SHI via the Catalyst To-Do item are waiving coverage under the UC SHI policy and will not be able to use the insurance or be eligible for the Graduate Student Health Insurance Award (GSHI Award) funds.
The GSHI Award is offered by the Graduate College for the fall and spring semesters. To qualify, students must submit their GSHI or GA offer letter to the Graduate College via the submission form and maintain all eligibility requirements throughout the semester. The award does not waive the UC SHI charge; students will still see a charge for UC SHI on their term bill.
Students can create a Student Health Insurance Account through United Healthcare Student Resources to access their ID card, claims status, EOBs, network providers, correspondence, and coverage information.

The University of Cincinnati offers a Graduate Student Health Insurance Award (GSHI Award) for graduate students to cover the cost of the Student Health Insurance (SHI) charge. The GSHI Award is available for the fall and spring semesters, and the spring semester coverage continues through the summer term at no additional cost.
Eligibility for the GSHI Award is assessed each semester, and students may receive the award for one or both semesters. To be eligible, students must:
- Be a Graduate Assistant (teaching, research, or administrative) or Fellow, in the UC payroll system as a graduate assistant or fellow, or paid via a Catalyst "departmental item type" designated as a fellowship stipend.
- Receive stipend payments of a minimum of $2,878.40 per semester through UC Payroll within the specified pay dates.
- Maintain university student health insurance coverage throughout the qualifying award term.
- Enroll for at least 10 graduate credit hours in each qualifying award semester.
- Maintain eligibility to receive general funds financial aid under the 174 Graduate Credit Rule.
It is important to note that audited courses do not count toward the minimum credit hour requirement. Additionally, students who waive the university health insurance will not be eligible for the GSHI Award.
The GSHI Award does not waive the UC SHI charge; instead, it posts financial aid funds to the student's term bill. For the 2024-25 academic year, the Graduate College has secured funding to provide a GSHI award at 100% of the single student UC SHI cost, which is $1,213.50 per semester or $2,427 per academic year. Students who purchase a family plan will receive the maximum total of their award ($2,427) on their fall semester bill.
For more information and to apply for the GSHI Award, students can visit the University of Cincinnati website and submit their GSHI offer letter for the relevant academic year.

Bloodborne Pathogen Insurance
The University of Cincinnati offers Bloodborne Pathogen Insurance (BPI), also known as Needlestick Insurance, to students who may be exposed to human bloodborne pathogens during their course of study. The insurance is mandatory for students with open/active programs in specific colleges and programs, including Medical Laboratory Science, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Advanced Standing Track - Nursing, and Dental Hygiene Technology, among others.
Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause diseases in humans. The three most common bloodborne pathogens are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Exposure to these pathogens can occur through needlesticks and other sharps-related injuries, especially for workers in occupations such as first responders, healthcare personnel, and housekeeping personnel in certain industries.
To reduce or eliminate the hazards of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, employers must implement an exposure control plan that outlines protective measures for employees. This includes engineering controls, such as using safer medical devices like needleless and shielded needle devices, as well as personal protective equipment and employee training.
The University of Cincinnati's BPI coverage is an annual premium of $16.00, charged to the student's bill. It is important to note that the University may amend, modify, or rescind any existing student health insurance policies or guidelines at any time.
