The University of Minnesota Morris (UMN Morris) is a public liberal arts college in Morris, Minnesota. It was founded in 1960 as a public, co-educational, residential liberal arts college offering Bachelor of Arts degrees.
However, its history can be traced back to 1887, when the first building of the Morris Industrial School for Indians, an American Indian boarding school, was constructed on the site. The school was founded by Mother Mary Joseph Lynch and was initially run by the Roman Catholic Sisters of Mercy under contract to the US government.
In 1898, the Office of Indian Affairs (now called the Bureau of Indian Affairs) took over the school's operations to introduce a more progressive curriculum. The school closed in 1909 as part of a congressionally authorized program to reduce the number of boarding schools and increase the number of schools on reservations.
In 1910, the University of Minnesota established the West Central School of Agriculture (WCSA) on the same campus. This was a coeducational residential high school that provided agricultural and home economics education to rural youth. The WCSA operated until 1963, but declining enrollment in the late 1950s led to the University of Minnesota phasing out its regional agricultural schools.
Thanks to a grassroots citizens movement, the University of Minnesota decided to develop the campus into a four-year liberal arts college. UMN Morris opened its doors in September 1960, offering Bachelor's degrees in various fields. The college has since become known for its small community, collaborative research, study abroad opportunities, and service learning.
