Auburn University: Parent Access To Student Grades

Auburn University allows parents to check their student's grades through the Family Portal. To access the portal, parents must first be granted access by their student. Once access is granted, parents can log in to the Family Portal and follow the steps outlined by the university to view their student's grades. It is important to note that access to student records is protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which places limits on the right to review educational records.

Log in to the Family Portal

To check your student's grades at Auburn University, you must be a member of the Auburn University Parents' Association. This gives you access to the Family Portal, which allows students to grant you access to view their academic schedule and grades.

First, log in or sign up for the Family Portal at https://familyportal.auburn.edu/signin. If you are new to the Family Portal, you will need to click "sign up" and enter your name, personal email address, and create a password. You will then be taken through a brief onboarding survey to customize your Family Portal experience.

The Family Portal will provide a tutorial and review the features you now have access to. To connect with your student, click the graduation cap in the top right corner and enter your student's Auburn email address, using the format "______@auburn.edu".

Once your student accepts your connection, you can request access to certain FERPA-protected information. Please note that your student must be registered for courses before you can connect with them.

After your student accepts your connection and access requests, you will be able to view their approved information. This includes their overall GPA and mid-term and final-grade reports. You will not be able to access information on a by-item basis, such as grades by assignment, paper, or test. If you wish to access more detailed information, you will need to discuss this communication preference with your student.

Understanding FERPA:

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) places limits on the right to review educational records. Once your student is enrolled, you will not have access to their educational information unless they specifically grant it to you. It is important to read the FERPA information and discuss with your student the types of protected information and how they will share it with you.

Your student can also add you as an Authorized User to their eBill account, which will allow you to view records and pay bills. This is a separate process from the Family Portal financial information request.

• You will then see all the information blocks that your student has approved for you to see.
• Find and click on the "Overall GPA" section to view your student's mid-term and final-grade report.

Please note that you will not be able to see a by-assignment report. The Family Portal will only display the student's overall grade for each class. If you wish to access more detailed information, you will need to discuss this with the student directly.

In addition to the Family Portal, students can also grant their parents or guardians access to their eBill account. This will allow the parent or guardian to view the student's financial records and make payments.

View Overall GPA

To view a student's overall GPA at Auburn University, parents and families must first ensure they have been granted access by the student. This is due to the student's educational information being protected under the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Once access has been granted, parents can log in to the Family Portal with their credentials. On the home screen, there will be a section with the Auburn University logo in the top left corner and four icons in the top right corner. It is important to note that third-parties do not have the ability to access student information on a by-item basis; only the overall grade for each class will be visible.

If granted approval by the student, parents will receive notifications for changes to the "Overall GPA" section at midterm and when final grades are posted. For more detailed information on the student's grades for each assignment, paper, or test, parents are encouraged to communicate directly with the student.

View mid-term and final grades

Receive notifications for changes

Once you have been granted access by your student, you can receive notifications for changes to their grades at midterm and when final grades are posted. This is dependent on the approval of your student. If you are seeking more detailed information on your student's grades, such as by assignment, paper, or test, you should discuss this communication preference directly with your student.

To receive notifications for changes, you must first ensure that you have been granted access by your student. To do this, your student must log in to their AU Access Account and click on the "My Finances" tab. From there, they should select the "eBill" icon and choose "Authorized Users". Here, they can add your email address as an authorized user.

Once you have been set up as an authorized user, you can log in to the eBill portal to review your student's financial records and enable notifications. You will need to use the login credentials provided to you when your student set up your access.

It is important to note that students can revoke access to certain information at any time. Therefore, it is recommended to have an open conversation with your student about expectations regarding access to their educational records at the beginning of each semester.

Additionally, as a parent or family member, you can join the Auburn University Parents' Association, which provides access to the Family Portal. This portal allows students to grant access to view their academic schedule and grades.
