Robert Gordon University (RGU) was founded in the 18th century by Robert Gordon, a merchant from Aberdeen, Scotland. Gordon spent much of his life in Poland, amassing a fortune through his business in Danzig. After retiring to his hometown around 1720, he founded Robert Gordon's Hospital in 1729 or 1750 to educate the young sons and grandsons of Burgesses of the Guild who were too poor to afford school fees.
