The university also offers health insurance for international students through the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). UHIP is a mandatory, comprehensive health insurance plan that covers medically necessary doctors and hospital visits within Ontario for international students and their dependents. The university will automatically enrol international students in UHIP once they register for their courses and pay their fees. The cost of UHIP is $756 per year per person and is charged to the student's account at the beginning of the academic session.

University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)

Laurentian University provides health insurance through the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) to international and incoming exchange students. UHIP is a mandatory, comprehensive health insurance plan that provides health coverage for international students, incoming exchange students and their dependents (spouse and children). UHIP covers medically necessary doctors and hospital visits within Ontario.

To be eligible for UHIP, you must be enrolled in a program and registered for your courses. International students are automatically enrolled in UHIP every year once they register for their courses. However, it is the student's responsibility to ensure that their coverage is correct. The Laurentian University Plan Administrator should be informed if you have any dependents so that they can be added to your coverage. Coverage for your dependants is mandatory, and they must be signed up within 30 days of their arrival in Ontario.

The cost of UHIP depends on the number of people you are enrolling and how long you need coverage for. From September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024, UHIP coverage is $756 per year per person ($63 per month per person). This fee is charged to your student account and must be paid in full at the beginning of your academic session.

UHIP provides up to $1,000,000 CAD for primary health care services and eligible medically necessary services. It is important to note that supplementary coverage (e.g., vision, dental, prescriptions) is not included in UHIP. However, as a full-time student, you may have additional medical coverage through your student association health plan, which can help pay for services not covered by UHIP.

If you are an international student with a UHIP Pre-Approved Plan, you may request a premium refund if you leave your program or are no longer eligible for UHIP. You must fill out the UHIP Cancellation Form as soon as possible, as fees for previous terms are not refunded.

Health insurance for dependents

If you are an international student at Laurentian University, your dependents can be added to your insurance coverage. The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is a mandatory, comprehensive health insurance plan that covers the international student and their dependents (spouse and children).

To add your dependents to the UHIP plan, email uhip@Laurentian.ca with the following information:

• Your student number, first and last name
• Your dependent’s passport photo page
• Your dependent’s date of arrival in Ontario, Canada
• A completed UHIP Application Form

Once approved, a UHIP card with your name and your dependent's name will be sent to your university email address within 5 business days. Please note that coverage for your dependents is mandatory, and they must be enrolled and registered within 30 days of their arrival in Canada to avoid a $500 late fee. The cost of UHIP coverage depends on the number of people enrolled and the duration of coverage. For the period September 1, 2023–August 31, 2024, UHIP coverage is $756 per year per person.

The Students’ General Association Benefit Plan also offers health and dental coverage for Laurentian University students and their dependents. This plan is mandatory for full-time students and optional for online and part-time students. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the health plan fee is $299.99 for full-time students and $400 for online and part-time students who opt-in. To add dependents to this plan, there is an additional fee of $75 per dependent.

Supplementary coverage

There are three student associations at Laurentian University that offer extended health plans:

In late August or early September, or the first month of your first semester, your UHIP provider will send a welcome email to your Laurentian email account with a link to access your UHIP coverage card. You should print a copy of your UHIP card and carry it with you at all times so that you can easily access it in case you need to seek medical care. Remember to bring a paper copy of your UHIP card to your medical provider, as some providers outside of the Preferred Provider Network may charge more than what UHIP pays, and you will need to pay the difference.
